PITTSBURGH, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mylan PLC (NASDAQ: MYL) today announced that it has received a regulatory approval for its generic version of Pfizer's Viagra.
Pfizer, Inc. (NYSE: PFE), will now enter the market for Pfizer's Viagra (sildenafil citrate), which is the generic name of Pfizer's erectile dysfunction (ED) medicine Viagra (sildenafil). Mylan has entered the market for a generic version of Viagra that Pfizer believes is stronger and better tolerated and that Pfizer believes is "safer" and more effective than the branded version.
This is the second time Mylan has received a regulatory approval for Viagra. In June 2011, Mylan applied to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for approval to market its generic version of Viagra. Pfizer's Viagra is available by prescription only in the United States. Viagra will be marketed as a generic version of Pfizer's ED medicine, called Viagra, which is also sold under the brand name Pfizer. Pfizer has not received any marketing authorization for Viagra for a three-month period, and the generic product is not expected to have any effect on the effectiveness of Viagra.
The Mylan regulatory approval is for a three-month supply. Pfizer will continue to market its Viagra product in the United States.

A federal judge in California has ordered a federal prosecutor to stop lying about his illegal practice of buying Viagra from people and selling them to other people.
The ruling is the latest in a series of recent federal rulings by a top court in California that could end a criminal investigation into what is alleged to be an illegal practice of buying Viagra online.
Judge Richard W. AlmonInstruct the Pulver City District Court of Los Angeles County, which has jurisdiction over the case, in Los Angeles, and will hear the matter by April 14.
The prosecutor, Samuel C. Cunha, has been ordered to stop the investigation.
“The court’s order is consistent with the court’s precedent,” Judge AlmonInstruct said in a release.
In April, a federal judge in California ordered federal prosecutors to stop the practice of buying Viagra online from people who have been caught selling them online.
Prosecutors have not provided evidence to show that Cunha sold Viagra online. They have not proven that Cunha was buying the counterfeit Viagra.
The judge did not rule on whether Cunha was allowed to be prosecuted, but said Cunha had been permitted to conduct his probe.
“Our investigation was conducted in the interest of justice by a federal prosecutor who has been permitted to conduct his investigation,” Judge AlmonInstruct said in a statement.
“This case is important to the public as it demonstrates how difficult it is for criminal defendants to be prosecuted,” he added.
The prosecutor has been asked to sign the judgment that Cunha is “in custody and not in any capacity” and “in the interest of public safety.”

The federal judge has not issued a ruling. The judge did not rule on the question of whether Cunha was allowed to be prosecuted. But he has allowed the government to continue its investigation into the matter.
In a statement, the California Attorney General’s office said, “This matter is important to the public as it demonstrates how difficult it is for criminal defendants to be prosecuted, but that is not the case here.”
